The Heritage Working Boats Group relies on volunteers to move the boats between events and to talk to members of the public, giving details of how the working boats were used when they were actively working on the canals. The events attended are mainly in and around the Midlands with the boats being based at Icknield Wharf, near Birmingham. There are plenty of opportunities for volunteers to get involved, whether it be steering one of the boats, working locks or talking to school children about the history of the boats and the canals. There is no need to worry if you don't know your range from your dipper or if you have never heard of a cross bed as there are plenty of volunteers to welcome you aboard and show you the ropes. To register your interest in volunteering please complete the details below, you will then be presented with a form which you will need to download, print and send with your subscription to the membership secretary (address details are on the form). Before making a commitment or if you want to find out more you are welcome to come along to one of the events that we attend throughout the year and talk to the volunteers in attendance. The current list of events can be seen in the Events List. If you would like to check out other volunteering opportunities on the inland waterways please visit the Canal and River Trust volunteering web site at http://canalrivertrust.org.uk/volunteering.
